Peter Swanson is Assistant Professor of Foreign Language Education in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages at Georgia State University and the Coordinator of the Foreign Language Teacher Preparation program. In addition to directing the program, his responsibilities include the recruitment of students to the program, teaching courses on methods on the foundations of second language learning, foreign language methods, and the integration of technology into instruction as well as conducting research. His most recent research will be published in the Canadian Modern Language Review and Language Teaching Research regarding his studies of second/foreign language teachers in North America. Additionally, Dr Swanson serves as co-editor of SCOLT’s peer-reviewed publication, Dimension, as well as the Chair of the Teacher Education SIG for the Computer Assisted Language Instruction Consortium (CALICO).
Currently, he is conducting research in the areas of teachers’ sense of efficacy teaching languages, foreign language teachers’ identity and their socialization practices, and assessment. His work has been published in respected journals such as the Journal of Vocational Behavior, Hispania, and the Modern Language Journal. Of particular interest to this class, Dr Swanson and two colleagues’ research on the the use of digital recording technology in the FL classroom was published in the book Free and Open Source Software for Educators (2011) and the advantages of digital recording software in the language classroom in Open-Source Technologies for Maximizing the Creation, Deployment and Use of Digital Resources and Information (2012) .
